Halal Indian Restaurant in Town

We would like to share a very good news with all community brothers and sisters.

Here is what the owner has to say about opening this restaurant; "it was my dream since I came to Karratha to open a restaurant and now i am opening a restaurant named as “Pick-n-Move” Indian cuisine in Karratha very soon. All food will be 100% halal. We are expecting grand opening by 1^st week of July. It will accommodate 50-75 people at a time in dining area."

You will see advertisement vehicle in town as well as on FM radio and local Newspaper. Very soon you will be able to see all menu items and catering services on their website. Alam said the website deisgning is in progress and will be online sooon.

Assalam a'laikum Brothers/Sisters,

I would like to share the minutes of Mashwara done in between Karratha Muslim Community brothers, we tried to hire Millar’s well hall for whole month of Ramzan but unfortunately hall is booked for other activities during the week and other option were not suitable for all brothers those who do shift roster so all brothers agreed on as follows

1) First two days (Thursday & Friday) tarawee prayers will be at my home.

2) Saturday tarawee prayers will be at Summer Bhai home.

3) Sunday brother Saleem invited all at Millar’s well hall for Iftar Party so tarawee prayers will be at Millar’s well hall.

4) From Monday onwards permanently tarawee prayers will be at Tahir Bhai house except not on those days when we have Iftar party arranged by any family. Where ever Iftar party is arranged Magrib and Tarawee prayers will be pray at same home.

We are booking Millar’s well hall full day on 11th of September Saturday for Eid Celebration, we would like to arrange some entertainment stuff or games for children, please feel free to share your ideas to make this event successful.

Islamic New Year: Muharram

Muslims do not traditionally "celebrate" the beginning of a new year, but we do acknowledge the passing of time, and take time to reflect on our own mortality.

Muslims measure the passage of time using the Islamic (Hijrah) calendar. This calendar has twelve lunar months, the beginnings and endings of which are determined by the sighting of the crescent moon. Years are counted since the Hijrah, which is when the Prophet Muhammad migrated from Mecca to Madinah (approximately July 622 A.D.).

The Islamic calendar was first introduced by the close companion of the Prophet, 'Umar ibn Al-Khattab. During his leadership of the Muslim community, in approximately 638 A.D., he consulted with his advisors in order to come to a decision regarding the various dating systems used at that time. It was agreed that the most appropriate reference point for the Islamic calendar was the Hijrah, since it was an important turning point for the Muslim community. After the emigration to Madinah (formerly known as Yathrib), the Muslims were able to organize and establish the first real Muslim "community," with social, political, and economic independence. Life in Madinah allowed the Muslim community to mature and strengthen, and the people developed an entire society based on Islamic principles.

The Islamic calendar is the official calendar in many Muslim countries, especially Saudi Arabia. Other Muslim countries use the Gregorian calendar for civil purposes and only turn to the Islamic calendar for religious purposes.

The Islamic year has twelve months that are based on a lunar cycle. Allah says in the Qur'an:

"The number of months in the sight of Allah is twelve (in a year) - so ordained by Him the day He created the heavens and the earth...." (9:36).

"It is He Who made the sun to be a shining glory, and the moon to be a light of beauty, and measured out stages for it, that you might know the number of years and the count of time. Allah did not create this except in truth and righteousness. And He explains His signs in detail, for those who understand" (10:5).

And in his final sermon before his death, the Prophet Muhammad said, among other things, "With Allah the months are twelve; four of them are holy; three of these are successive and one occurs singly between the months of Jumaada and Sha'ban."

Islamic months begin at sunset of the first day, the day when the lunar crescent is visually sighted. The lunar year is approximately 354 days long, so the months rotate backward through the seasons and are not fixed to the Gregorian calendar. The months of the Islamic year are:

1. Muharram 2. Safar ("Empty" or "Yellow")

3. Rabia Awal ("First spring")

4. Rabia Thani ("Second spring")

5. Jumaada Awal ("First freeze")

6. Jumaada Thani ("Second freeze")

7. Rajab ("To respect")

8. Sha'ban ("To spread and distribute")

9. Ramadan ("Parched thirst" - this is the month of daytime fasting)

10. Shawwal ("To be light and vigorous")

11. Dhul-Qi'dah ("The month of rest")

12. Dhul-Hijjah ("The month of Hajj" - this is the month of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca)

KMC advises more Gatherings...

Yesterday was a great day for the community by meeting Muslim brothers from Perth. The KMC arranged a well-organised gathering for the visiting brothers. Most of the brothers were attended to this gathering with their kids. The day, all the remaining prayers (L’ohur, Asr, Magrib and Insha) were prayed together with Jamath. They started their journey back to Perth after Isha Prayer.

With the gathering yesterday, as one brother suggested, more gatherings are needed to keep alive our social values and sustain spirit of the Muslim brotherhood in the community. However, the KMC is just in its initial phase, but now and then, at least gathering are being organised with the availability of time for brothers/sisters. Most brothers are doing shift duty work on rosters. Therefore, with such work commitments it will be hard to meet frequently as some brothers suggested.

As one brother suggested, it is a good idea to meet all brothers/sisters in once a month just to create some awareness and gives the kid a peace of mind with other families and friends in the community. This could be plausible with advance planning per their shift rosters and other personal commitments.

As some suggested, it is good to arrange some Arabic classes to help the kids to learn Quran and its concept of proper recitations. Indeed, the parents are the best teachers for their kids but having such facilities would be a wonderful opportunity for parents who are in need. Let’s work together to create a family and brotherhood values in the community for the sake of Allah and Deen.

Our Community Concerns

Karratha Muslim Community (KMC) is formed recently due to the growing number of Muslims around the suburbs. We have got more than ten odd families and individuals who lives and work in this region. The community is consists of different professionals who are working in the mining and gas industry.

For the past few years, the Muslim community is growing every year from different nationals. Most of them are from Indian subcontinent and living in Australia as second generation Australian or living permanently in Australia with their families.

Currently, all the community gatherings are held in Karratha Community Centre in Millers Well. The hall is booked every Friday for Jum’aa Prayer with generous donations from KMC members. All Muslim festivals are being celebrated every year in Karratha or Port Hedland.

Last Ramadan (year 1430 H) was a landmark for the community with arrangements for the Tharawees Prayer and Eid Al-Fitr in this town. There was a great support from all the families and especially the brothers who did a great job by keeping aside their busy work schedules just for these gatherings.

However, without having a mosque to pray and lack in avenues (Islamic education) to offer families for their kids is a growing concern for this community who lives in Karratha. With that apprehension and good intention the KMC was formed and registered as a community group in the local district office – Shire of Roebourne. With bless of Allah (aw), the community is dedicated to build a mosque, but Insha Allah, this dream and vision will come true in a near future!

Although, there are factors which obstruct this visionary project, the KMC is committed to assist to build a place for Muslim community for their needs. Nevertheless, for any project the biggest obstacle would be the financial standing which slowdown a project as such. Insha Alla, we will do our best to fulfil this dream in a near future or else down the track! Your generous contribution and involvement would be the initial investment for this project!

As salam alaikum Brothers

I would like to inform you that Jammat from Perth is in Port Headland and they will be in Karratha on 4th Oct 2009 Sunday from 1:00pm to 7:30pm. I would like to request all brothers to be in Millar’s Well Hall during that time to share the knowledge of Din and Zuhar – Asar- Magrib – Isha prayers will be pray together. Millar’s well hall is booked.

It’s our responsibility to encourage kids towards Din and as they got school holidays i request all brothers to bring kids with you, those who are in shift please let me know we will pickup and drop them safely. Those who are in night shifts they can come at least for some hours whenever they feel comfortable.

Ladies are arranging food for all families including 5 Jammat Brothers so will have lunch and Dinner together. We are arranging some temporary curtain between ladies and gents during Bayan. Bayan time will be informed.
